A note on names:

Bentheim: German noble family of a region known for it's sandstone.

Armstrong's starter Pokemon could not be more of a perfect fit; Ben has a furious passion for battle, and loves the thrill of fighting an equal opponent. Despite losing his alchemy, Armstrong is managing to teach Ben the different sorts of techniques he uses, what with Ben's natural ability to manipulate rocks and earth! Ben is a devoted student and has an honourable streak as wide as his trainers, making him quite charming and pleasant to be around. He is determined to be able to recreate the artistic attacks Armstrong describes to him, and can often be found out training and practicing with great determination. Will endeavour to shake hands (or as close as he can get) with his opponents, regardless if he wins or loses.

Maastricht: Site of the first known usage of the Eagle as a symbol for Germany.

Almost obnoxiusly cheerful, Maa likes to play around with everyone and pull the occasional prank on her fellow members of Armstrong's team. None of her jokes are mean spirited, however; most of the time she really just wants to play. She has a habit of misinterpreting angry reactions or ignoring them completely, sometimes to the point where violence is needed to show her that no, Maa, we don't want to play. Anything too vicious will result in retaliation, but she usually gets the message and backs off, still being her jolly self. Has a habit of playing with her opponent in battle before defeating them.

Löwenmensch: An ancient sculpture found in Germany of a lion-man.

Lowen is a rather odd creature, as Pokemon go. He has a habit of disappearing during the night only to be found staring at the moon, or admiring the stars. Speaking mainly in vague riddles and metaphors, he is nevertheless an extremely intelligent pokemon underneath all that mystic mumbo-jumbo; he merely has a strange way of expressing it. His manner of thinking outside the box is incredibly useful if a battle has gotten him into a tight spot. If left alone, he will usually disappear into a daydream, thinking about things most other Pokemon couldn't start to comprehend.

Stephanitz: German dog breeder credited with developing the German Hound.

The most mature and level-headed member of Armstrong's team, Steph is a courageous Pokemon fiercly loyal to her master. She manages to remain cautiously optimistic in the majority of circumstances and is known as the 'motherly, advice-giving one' to her fellow party members. It takes a great deal for her to throw in the towel when it comes to battling, and she firmly believes that perseverance is the key to getting through most of life's problems. Together, her and Armstrong are improving on each other's knowledge of tracking, and she cherishes the moments she gets to spend with him.

Berlichingen: German Imperial knight known as the 'Knight of the Iron Hand', for his (automail, obviously!!!) prosthetic hand made of iron.

A short fuse and a potty mouth never make a very good combination and Berli is living proof; it doesn't take much to set him off, and once he's swearing and yelling it's difficult to calm him down. His insults are always rather creative, at least, if not very gentlemanly! He's not the sort to take lip from anyone and has a tendency to be quite violent and merciless in his battles, a habit Armstrong is desperately trying to break him out of. When he's not angry he's being snide and sarcastic, but despite all this he manages to get along fairly well with the other members of Armstrong's team. Apart from Stein.

Neuschwanstein: Personal (and most famous) castle of King Ludwig the II of Bavaria; also known as the Swan King.

Possibly the most pretentious Shiny pokemon in existence, Stein firmly believes that he was born with a (shiny) silver spoon in his mouth and should be treated as such. He is a goddamn prince, and no you are not allowed to believe otherwise. He dislikes battling because he hates the idea of his glistening feathers getting damaged or dirty, and for this reason Armstrong will really only use him when a quick victory is guaranteed. Can either be found preening, washing himself, or staring at his (gorgeously glittery) reflection in the nearest reflective surface.

Kindergarten: A class young children take to prepare them for the first grade of school.

Armstrong's Togekiss is rather aptly named, even if he didn't exactly forsee his personality. Kindy has an intense naivete to him, and isn't really capable of understanding complex emotions or themes, particularly those of a dark nature. He has a tendency to get upset easily due to this but can be quickly calmed with food, particularly sweet things. His childlike demeanour can actually be rather charming after a while, even if it doesn't make him the most capable battler in the world. Armstrong really only prefers to use him if he knows Kindy can win easily, as strategy is a bit difficult for him to process.

Friedrich: German dog breeder credited with developing the German Hound.

Richie is the son of Lowen and Steph, and can usually be found sniffing after scents or digging holes in the ground, looking for interesting things. Due to this habit he has the tendency to get so invested in a scent that he'll follow it to the point where he can't make his way back, meaning that either his parents or his trainer have to track him down (which isn't hard; he starts yelping in panic the second he realises he's lost). For this reason his mother is quite protective of him, even though he's got a more impressive movepool than her and is quite capable of looking after himself. An enthusiastic, if unrefined fighter.

Fregattenkapitan: The rank of Commander in the German navy.

The very definition of a old soul, Gatten has possessed a rather flamboyant sense of discipline and class ever since he hatched. Evolution has only intensified his personality and made him all the more outspoken, and he enjoys yelling at his fellow Pokemon when they're stepping out of line (for this reason, he tends to clash a bit with Berli, but in an affectionately dysfunctional manner), usually suceeding in terrifying them back into order. He has absolutely no sense of self-preservation when it comes to battling, and has a tendency to charge, horn down, right at his opponent no matter what species or level they are, and will only give up a fight if he is physically incapable of continuing to move.

Drachenzahne: The concrete 'Dragon's Teeth' used to impede tanks and infrantry by the German army.

Zahna was born to fight. Serious and heavily focused, she dislikes fighting Pokemon weaker than her as she lives for the challenge of a hard-won battle, the sorts that really test her endurance. Training with her can be exhausting for those who aren't prepared for her main method; keep on fighting until you don't have the energy any more. For this reason, she tends to train quite a bit with just her trainer, who is crazy (some prefer to use 'dedicated') enough to go to her extremes. The one-on-one lessons are what she prefers, anyway, especially since it allows her to focus on mastering his alchemical tricks as unlike Zug, she doesn't have a natural affinity for them. She makes up for this, however, by simply training harder and longer to master them.

Bayern: Southern German state, location of a range of Alps (also castles Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau). Known as Bavaria in English.

Arguing with Bay is a bit like hitting yourself in the head with a hammer; pointless, painful, and it'll leave you with a rather horrid migrane. It doesn't really matter if you're arguing that the sky is blue; if she's decided it's green you're wrong, you're stupid and you should feel bad about yourself!! Tell Bay to go do something and chances are she'll do the opposite just to spite you (when she was younger she tried this with her trainer; it Didn't Work). You say she has a serious attitude problem, she'll just start informing you of your many flaws. Tends to get away with this a lot more than she should because her trainer is x4 weak to cute. Also Richie is a baka and she totally doesn't like him, or anything!!!

Liechtenauer: A 14th century German fencing master.

Tena possesses a rather enviable sense of zen, and is the quietest member of Armstrong's little clan, preferring to communicate in nods or monotonous noises rather than conversations. She's decided that she is Armstrong's official bodyguard (not that he needs one, but he'd rather not discourage her), and will calmly accept all manner of injury if it means keeping him safe. Her technique with her claws is precise, perfected and poised, and she is quite terrifying on the battlefield, mostly due to the fact that she never reacts to anything, not even pain. When not training, she can usually be found in a quiet area by herself, meditating or sharpening her claws.

Hohenschwangau: The childhood residence of King Ludwig II, also known as the Swan King.

Son of Maa and Stein. The combination of an absent-minded mother and apathetic, condescending father hasn't really done much for Hohen's temperament, which was already leaning towards unpleasant. His sister, Breeze the Swanna (property of Crow Hogan) got more attention from their father as an egg than Hohen has his entire life. Hohen gets angry incredibly easily, and tends to be vicious in his fights, worrying his trainer. He shuns the rest of Armstrong's Pokemon and often insults anyone who tries to get close to him. However, underneath all that anger and rage is a desperate loneliness and desire for affection.

Kaiserlautern: A German city with a reputedly haunted military barracks.

Kai isn't really all that good as a ghost. In fact, whenever he attempts to scare anyone, he's usually the one who ends up squealing and flailing. Incredibly timid and fidgety, he'd much rather float around the place than go out of his way to horrify anyone. Luckily, his lack of confidence doesn't tend to affect his battling prowess too much, although he's another that Armstrong tends to keep on the sidelines, due to how easily he panics. Needs his food prepared a certain way, won't sleep unless at least one other Pokemon is doing the same, and even has a very detailed list of the sorts of dreams he will and will not eat. Tends to fuss over his trainer a lot.

Schopenhauer: A German philosopher who focused a great deal on willpower.

Despite being named for a philosopher dedicated to willpower, Hope doesn't seem to be the type to muster the will for much more than staring at the clouds and daydreaming. It's not so much that she's lazy (she always tries her hardest in battle, whenever her trainer needs her!), it's just very hard to get her serious about anything. Her favourite place to sleep is on Armstrong's head (it's like sitting on an egg!), but she can also be found curled up in a number of places, looking like a cloud that just fell to earth. Quite a talented flyer...when she actually bothers to get in the air.

Zugspitze: The highest mountain in Germany.

Zug's favourite thing to do in the world is bash her face against rocks. Really, if she's not sleeping, training or eating, chances are she'll be off by some boulder, pounding her face into the stone with rather bemusing intensity. Despite first appearances, she's actually rather intelligent, and can recreate Armstrong's favourite alchemical abilities with ease. Quite a serious battler who enjoys completely ploughing through her opponents with her earth-based powers, she prefers to keep to herself rather than socialize with the rest of Armstrong's pokemon. Ben and Zahna are the only exceptions to this rule, as she enjoys training with them.

Duesseldorf: German city in which a 10,000 year old mammoth tusk was recently unearthed.
